During the coronavirus outbreak, enhanced cleaning methods and precautions are recommended to reduce the risk of infection, even when there are no suspected cases of coronavirus in the property.

Gather your usual cleaning supplies, plus a disinfectant product and disposable gloves & shoe covers

Keep social distance

Once inside, avoid physical greetings and try to stay more than 2 metres away from anybody else in the office.

Disinfect your hands

Wash your hands with hot soapy water for at least 20 seconds. Once you have washed your hands, put on your disposable gloves, and optionally an apron.

Allow for proper ventilation

Before cleaning, open any windows that you can for ventilation, and turn on extractor fans.

Avoid shaking soft furnishings (mats, rugs cushions etc). These items can carry germs, and shaking them can contaminate areas you have already cleaned. Follow the procedures along to clean your office furniture;

Upholstery

It’s best to start with a vacuum since upholstered items are notoriously difficult to clean. Vacuuming the chair seats or bench cushions that are upholstered with fabric will remove any dust, and can revitalize the look of the fabric. For tough stains, use a water-based solvent in a dabbing motion on the discolored area. Test your solvent underneath the chair, first, to make sure it won’t stain or cause damage to the fabric.

Leather

For most executive offices in Nairobi, Kisumu, Eldoret, Kakamega Kenya, cleaning office leather furniture needs special care. You can use leather cleaner, or, vinegar mixed with linseed oil. Gently wipe on the leather cleaner with a soft cloth, and then make sure to wipe down the leather again with a damp cloth to remove excess cleaner. It is important to follow the instructions on the leather cleaner carefully, and only use it on real leather upholstery.

Surfaces

Ensure you label different cleaners for different desk materials as one of the best office maintenance habit.

For plastics and laminate, use a dust cloth to remove dust and dirt, and then a sanitizing cleaner or Windex to remove bacteria. Wood veneer desks only need a small amount of soapy water. Wipe gingerly around the keyboard with a microfiber towel after disconnecting it from the computer. For reaching really stubborn grime, try a compressed air can.
