When healthcare workers are tending to a patient, the following protocols are an absolute must:

Wash hands each time after touching human debris (blood, secretions, excretions and contaminated items), whether or not gloves are worn. Use plain soap for routine hand washing, and antimicrobial agents for specific circumstances.

Wear gloves when touching blood, body fluids, secretions, excretions and contaminated items.

Wear a mask, eye protection (or a face shield) and a gown during procedures and activities that are likely to generate splashes or sprays of blood or body fluids.

Ensure that reusable patient-care equipment is not used on another patient until it has been cleaned appropriately.

A patient who contaminates the environment or who does not assist in maintaining appropriate hygiene must be placed in an isolate or separate room.
